Make an appointment to register a notice of marriage

After the 1st May, this platform will not be available to book an appointment.  We will link the new system to our web pages on the 1st May

 

Important; It is essential that you make sure that you have read the relevant webpages about the requirements for giving notice, particularly the information about documentation you will need to bring confirming your nationality and identity and residency requirements.

WE CANNOT ACCEPT ELECTRONIC PROOF OF I.D., ADDRESS, OR NATIONALITY

Before making an appointment please ensure you have read all the legal requirements ESPECIALLY WHETHER YOU NEED TO BRING A PHOTOGRAPH TO YOUR APPOINTMENT

Please check you have all the correct documentation to bring to your appointment before booking your appointment, with particular attention to whether you need to bring with you a passport size photograph 

If you arrive for a notice appointment and do not have the required documentation or do not meet the residency requirements, then we will NOT be able to take your notice. A new appointment will need to be made, and the fees will need to be paid again. If you are unsure or wish to speak to a registrar please contact the Register Office at marriages@salford.gov.uk and leave a daytime telephone number.

DO NOT make an appointment if you are showing symptoms of COVID-19  

DO NOT make an appointment if you have been in contact with anyone showing symptoms of COVID-19 within the last 10 days  

Salford Register Office are still following Social Distancing measures, so please hand sanitise upon entering the building (hand sanitiser will be provided) and visitors are encouraged to wear masks

It is important that you read all the details in your confirmation email once you have made your appointment to avoid disappointment and unnecessary delays.

 

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

You must read and acknowledge the Terms and Conditions before continuing to make your appointment.

It is advised that you arrive for your appointment 10 minutes prior to the appointment time.  If you arrive late, you may not be seen and would have to pay the fee to rebook your appointment.

In order to secure your appointment, you will be required to pay a booking fee of £35 per person at the end of this booking process using your credit or debit card.

Depending upon your circumstances, additional fees may be payable in order for you to give notice. Any such fees will be payable when you attend your appointment.

If you intend to hold your ceremony within England and Wales, you must first give notice. To do this both of you must attend a register office, provide certain documentation and undergo an interview. The register office you need to attend and what is required of you can vary depending upon your circumstances.

Notices are venue specific and are valid for 12 months.  Please ensure you do not make an appointment more than 12 months ahead of your ceremony date. If you decide to change your venue you will have to give another legal notice and pay the fees again.

Ceremonies outside England and Wales

If you are getting married or entering a civil partnership outside of England and Wales, different rules apply depending on the country where your ceremony will be held.

You may be asked to provide a ‘Certificate of No Impediment’ which is a document to confirm there are no objections to your legal marriage/civil partnership.  You MUST consult with the legal authorities in the country where you propose to have your ceremony to ensure you have all the necessary legal paperwork required which can also include completing documentation in that country alongside providing your own necessary identity documents.

If you are asked for the Certificate of No Impediment and if you are a resident in Salford, we may be able to take your legal notice.  The certificate can be issued after 28 clear days from the date you gave your notice. This document however cannot be issued for all countries/nationalities due to the various laws and treaty agreements between the relevant countries.  

If you are a resident of Salford and are unsure whether you are eligible to give notice of marriage, please contact us on 0161 793 2500 or alternatively email us at marriages@salford.gov.uk with the following information about both of the parties: 

  • Nationality

  • Place of Residence

  • Country where ceremony is to take place

  • Date of Ceremony

  • Daytime contact number 

Once we have this information, we can contact you and advise if you are eligible to give notice.  You will need to provide the town, locality, and country where your ceremony will take place.   You cannot book these appointments online.

  • I/we have checked that I am able to give my notice at Salford Register Office. Click here for more information.

  • I/we have chosen a suitable venue for the ceremony and know the full official name and address of that venue. Please see where to get married and Ceremonies at the Town Hall for more information.

  • I/we are free lawfully to enter into a marriage/civil partnership Click here for more information.

  • I/we have checked whether I/we will be subject to the Home Office referral scheme, and if so, I/we have read and understood all the relevant information.

  • I/we will bring all the appropriate supporting evidence

  • I/we are aware that both parties need to give notice in person and that it is not possible for me to give notice on behalf of my partner

  • If applicable I/we will bring the required passport sized photos

  • If applicable I will brink a valid “share code” in order to prove my immigration status.

  • If necessary, I/we will bring an appropriate 3rd party to act as interpreter.

  • I/we are aware that the ceremony cannot take place until the schedule has been issued

  • I/we are aware there may be additional fees payable at the notice appointment dependent on my circumstances.

  • I/we understand that if I/we are not able to fulfil all the legal requirements at the appointment I will not be able to give notice and will not be able to get a refund.

  • I/we understand that if I/we are late for the appointment I/we may not be seen and will not be able to get a refund.
